Autumn Motorhome Checklist: Get Ready for the Colder Months

Autumn is the ideal time to give your motorhome or campervan some attention. Whether you are planning a few more trips or preparing to store your vehicle over winter, completing some essential checks now can help prevent problems as the weather becomes colder.
Here is our practical autumn checklist to help protect your motorhome or campervan and keep it ready for your next adventure.
Check for Damp and Water Ingress
As autumn brings wetter weather, it is important to check your vehicle for signs of damp or water ingress.
Look out for:
- Musty smells inside the vehicle
- Soft or discoloured walls and flooring
- Condensation around windows
- Damaged seals around doors, windows and roof lights
- Mould or mildew inside cupboards and storage areas
A professional damp check can identify moisture that may not be immediately visible, giving you the opportunity to address any problems before they become more serious.
Inspect the Seals and Exterior
Give the exterior of your motorhome or campervan a thorough clean, removing dirt, leaves and debris from the roof, gutters and drainage channels.
Inspect the seals around windows, doors and rooflights for any signs of damage or deterioration. Making sure water can drain away correctly will help protect your vehicle during periods of heavy autumn rain.
Avoid using harsh household cleaning products, as these may damage specialist finishes and seals.
Check Your Tyres
Tyres require attention even if your motorhome or campervan will not be driven regularly.
Check the tyre pressures and inspect each tyre for cracks, damage or uneven wear. You should also check the age of your tyres, as they can deteriorate over time even when they still have plenty of tread remaining.
If your vehicle will be stored for an extended period, moving it occasionally can help prevent flat spots from developing.
Look After the Battery
Colder weather and long periods without use can affect both your leisure battery and vehicle battery.
Check their condition and charge levels before putting your vehicle into storage. Depending on your vehicle and storage arrangements, you may need to disconnect the leisure battery or use a suitable maintenance charger.
Always follow the guidance in your owner’s handbook, particularly if your vehicle has a lithium leisure battery.
Prepare the Water System
If you are planning to store your vehicle or leave it unused during freezing temperatures, the fresh-water and waste-water systems should be drained completely.
Water left inside pipes, taps, pumps or tanks can freeze and expand, potentially causing expensive damage. Remember to empty and clean the toilet cassette and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for draining your specific vehicle.
Keep the Interior Clean and Ventilated
Good ventilation can help reduce condensation and prevent musty smells from developing.
Remove food, bedding and other items that could attract moisture or pests. Clean the fridge, switch it off and leave the door slightly open.
Where possible, leave internal doors and cupboards open to allow air to circulate throughout the vehicle. Moisture traps or a suitable dehumidifier may also help, depending on where your vehicle is stored.
Test the Heating System
If you plan to continue touring throughout autumn and winter, make sure your heating and hot-water systems are working correctly before your next trip.
Having your system inspected can help identify potential faults before you find yourself without heating on a cold night. You should also check your gas supply and make sure all appliances are used and maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
